Our next meeting is on Saturday 8th March at the DCMS Headquarters near Trafalgar Square. We hope that you will be able to attend and please do arrive as soon as possible after 10.30 a.m. for tea or coffee and a chance to meet with other members. The Rt Hon Tessa Jowell has kindly agreed to join us from 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. to meet with individuals and give a short talk. Tessa Jowell is Minister responsible for Humanitarian Assistance. The Humanitarian Assistance Unit was set up in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport after the tsunami and the London Bombings. It is responsible for ensuring that ‘the needs of British victims of major emergencies, and those of their families, are understood and considered properly within Government’. I am sure that many of us feel that more remains to be done for the longterm requirements of those still badly affected psychologically and financially by the tsunami, and this is our opportunity to express these needs. Tessa will also talk about the proposed tsunami memorial. This will be followed by a break for refreshments, and then the Annual General Meeting will take place at 1.30 p.m. (Please see attached agenda). The new committee will hold their first meeting at around 3.30 p.m. The meeting will be at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport Head Office, in Room GCR1 & 2 on the ground floor near the main entrance. Staff will be on hand to take members through the entrance security. The address is 2-4 Cockspur Street, London SW1Y 5DH. Cockspur Street is between the S.W. corner of Trafalgar Square and Pall Mall. The nearest underground station is Charing Cross. Your committee is very aware that only a small proportion of those affected by the tsunami are currently members. If any of you know of other people who you feel could benefit by joining us, please do let us know. We would like to reach as many people as possible, particularly for the consultation about the potential sites for the proposed memorial and subsequently for the memorial design and objectives. To make sure that there are enough refreshments without over catering, PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WILL BE ATTENDING by emailing Steve Gill at stevepgill@gmail.com We hope to welcome as many as possible. Some financial help may be available for UK residents living far from London and who would otherwise be unable to attend. Please contact our treasurer Jean for details PRIOR to the AGM: jeancassatt@yahoo.com Several members have asked us to keep the ‘official’ part of meetings as brief as possible, to leave more time for informal discussions. You can help us achieve this by contacting a member of the committee before the meeting about nominations or ‘any other business’. Looking forward to seeing you next month
Robert Brewster Co-chair, Tsunami Support (UK)
